Oh how my heart hurts. Not only for our camp aka "Hardtimes Plantation" but for all those affected by the now infamous Mississippi River Flood 2011. This year river levels are expected to reach an all time high, surpassing the former higher levels of the "100 years flood" of 1927. The river is expected to crest at Vicksburg on 5/19 at 57.5. Normally flood stage is 43 feet. As of today, we already have about 5 feet of water in the camp. If the prediction holds, the water will reach our ceilings and beyond.
Thankfully we have flood insurance and it is "just a camp" as my Mom says, but it is still rough. There are lots of memories there, and it is hard to believe we have only been part of the Yucatan family since 1996. There have been numerous ski crashes, lost rafts, moonlight boat rides, porch-sitting visits, Turkey Neck parades, bonfires, trips to the levee, fish fries, crawfish boils, etc. Life at the Lake is about slowing down, getting away from it all, and spending quality time with each other. To quote our cheesy t-shirts "You can at Yucatan!"
So this will be a rebuilding summer for us, and almost all of the camps on our end of the lake, but trust me, by next summer we will be back and better forever. And to all of those suffering the effects of the flood in their "real homes" all up and down the Mississippi Delta, my heartfelt prayers go out for you.
